CD Reviews

Terrific Live Performance

"A Hawaiian buddy gave me this disc, I listened to it about 100 times, loaned it to someone else and am sorry I did. The Marley Tribute is unreal. "Never get weary" has wonderful guitar riffs, and Toot's voice was never better. Very listenable, very high energy. The concert fits together as a whole very well, so once you start it, expect to want to listen to the whole thing. It does last an hour. I've bought a couple of the Toots studio albums but they don't compare. Go for it, you will thank yourself for taking the chance."
I wish I could say I liked this more.....

"I wish I could say I liked this more but it was a disappointment. I knew Toots' music through his "Pressure Drop" greatest hits anthology and was looking for the magic I found there in a live recording. While the live CD is a documentary of what sounds like a memorable musical event, I guess you had to be there to really get into the music. The songs are a bit rambling and there is too much American soul-funk influence. While the female backing vocalists are great, I miss the wonderful male harmonies of the Maytals. Also, the "Band Steps Forward" piece goes on way too long as Toots introduces his backing musicians with the standard "On guitar, from such and such a place, Mr. such and suh" following by you've-heard-it-all-before solo. Like I said, this is a great documentary but the music is far from compelling. Oh well....."
