Synopsis

Album Description
"Among the 10 best albums of the '80s." -- Village Voice Tommy Flanagan's 1982 tribute to the music of Thelonious Monk (who had died earlier that year), is considered one of his best recordings ever. Presenting soulful, very melodic and personal versions of Monk's angular master works, Flanagan shows a complete mastery that reflects the whole jazz tradition, from gospel and blues through the romanticism of Bill Evans into modernism.

CD Reviews

One of the best jazz albums I've ever heard
Peter D. Mark | Seattle, WA | 02/06/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I was just browsing around here and was surprised to see that 1. no one had yet reviewed this album in this space, and 2. the price was so high ($42). I own the original Enja LP, which I think was a German import. The sound of the original vinyl LP is superb. The surfaces are so clean you would never suspect it isn't a CD. The sound engineering is excellent: the sound is clean and vivid. I don't think I've heard the piano sound as present and clear on any other recording - jazz or classical. But the music - Flanagan's elegant take on a selection of Monk tunes, is just magnificent. Flanagan's playing is flawless. He captures the essence of Monk's music in his own distinctive style. There's real subtlety and nuance here, and absolute beauty. This (along with Flanagan's album Giant Steps - a tribute to Coltrane) is one of my very favorite jazz albums of all time."
