CD Reviews

The price of devotion...
05/02/1999
(3 out of 5 stars)

"There are only three tracks, so I gave a star for each one. The first is the ever elusive Song of the Siren from "The Monkees" t.v. show(and it fades out at the end!); the others are Gypsy Woman and Buzzin Fly from a Danish radio broadcast. Those are great and are reminiscent of Honeyman. The problem is that you end up paying 24 dollars for a 60 page booklet poorly written about Tim Buckley. It's only saving grace is the abundance of quotes, and even a few poems(thankfully written in italics so you can skip over the other garbage!). Is it worth it? If you like Tim Buckley it's not really a choice at all, but if you're looking to experiment with him go somewhere else. You'd be paying more than a dollar per minute of music. I can't believe how low those record industry bastards stooped this time! Lousy gougers!"
Looks great to me... Mine is comming soon!

"This album only has three tracks but, it also contains a 115 page booklet of interviews, stories, and other cool stuff. The three tracks ... 1. Song to the Siren (The Monkees TV show) 2. Gypsy Woman (Danish Radio 1968) 3. Buzzin' Fly (Danish Radio 1968) These are three great songs, especially the first track... I know a True Tim Buckley fan will love it."
RARE LIVE BUCKLEY AND BOOK

(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is really a CD that accompanies a small book (115 pages) about the late Tim Buckley. The CD is only 19 minutes in length approximately. The sound of the first track,"Song To The Siren",is fairly poor. The track itself is very short-under 2 minutes. It can be heard in much better fidelity on "The Tim Buckley Anthology",from Elektra/Rhino Records. The other two tracks,"Gypsy Woman"and "Buzzin' Fly",are from a Danish radio broadcast from 1968. The fidelity of these two tracks is very good. Plus, these two tracks are unavailable (legally) from any other source. Both of these tracks feature his band at the time-possibly Lee Underwood-guitar,Dave Friedman-vibes,Danny Thompson-bass,and Buckley on guitar.

The two lengthy (11:50-"Gypsy Woman" and 6:00-"Buzzin'Fly" minutes each) Danish radio tracks are where Buckley really shines, his voice possesses a youthful, almost searing energy, and the musicianship supports him at every turn. The vibes give this music an almost ethereal feel, with Underwood's guitar slipping in notes between Buckley's vocals, and the bass holding everything together nicely.

The book, which has bee translated from Italian to English, and is very worth while to the Buckley fan. Because it has been translated, sometimes the word usage is not quite correct, but what it lacks in correctness it makes up for with enthusiasm and great feeling for Buckley's music. The text is presented in both English and Italian,so it's actually about 55 pages or so of text in English, and a few b&w photographs. Nonetheless, this overview of Buckley is informative, going into some depth about various Buckley albums. There is also an extensive discography, including bootlegs,a list of print articles, and internet information on Buckley.

This is something that is worth owning, not only for the two rare tracks, but also for the book, which is interesting for its point of view, and it's writing/translation style. This is manufactured in Italy, and is one of several this company has released. Examples of other releases are CAPTAIN BEEFHEART,JEFFERSON AIRPLANE,SYD BARRETT,and THE CLASH,among many others, all of which contain rare tracks. Get this before it's gone."
