Middleton | Auckland, NZ | 08/10/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "For anyone who hasn't sampled the glorious singing of The Brabant Ensemble before, or the deeply felt music of Crecquillon, with its gentle, flowing phrases and false relations, then this is a good CD to start with. It has been a firm favourite of mine for a couple of years now. The mass (Missa Mort m'a prive) is extremely beautiful and memorable. The title, translated as 'Death has deprived me' refers to the death of Isabella of Portugal, beloved wife of Charles V. The material on which the mass is based is heard over and over, ever evolving, and with no hint of monotony at all. The first of the chansons with the title Mort m'a prive (a 5) clearly provides much of the material used in the mass, but there are subtle references to be discovered amongst other pieces on this disc. The recorded sound is sumptuous yet with plenty of clarity. I want this disc on my desert island! " Crequillon: Mort m'a prive'... D. S.
