Synopsis

"Have twang bar, will travel" might well be the Wave Benders' calling card as they rock a dozen familiar seasonal tunes in a mostly instrumental set that's certain to jump-start your Christmas. Echoing The Ventures' Christmas Album, these crazy lads courageously manage to one- and two-up their geetar brethren by adding such unusual instruments to the mix as the theremin, saw, accordion, and glockenspiel. That alone qualifies them as more than just a garage-band surf unit, but then garage bands were always about making a good sound that you could dance to. And the fun discovered here, from wacky saw-swaying choruses trimmed with glockenspiel on "The Twelve Days of Christmas" to the relentless attack of ringing guitars and 4/4 drums heard just about everywhere (except on the delicately arranged "Do You Hear What I Hear?" and "Silent Night"), is as swift and effective as a good shot of warm brandy right before you hit the slopes or ride a big one. --Martin Keller

"The stalest Xmas carols become fresh and fun again when played surf-rock style. Amuse your friends! The Pyronauts and Los Straitjackets have recently recorded great instrumental surf Xmas albums; this here CD includes some vocals, too.

All the cuts are extremely well done, with some tracks overlaying other styles atop the surf undertow. The finale ("We Wish You a Merry Christmas") is done Byrds-style, with jangling 12-string guitars and sweetly haggard vocal harmonies. After you get this CD, you'll notice that you've been enjoying snatches from it as NPR interludes throughout December."

"Surfin' Christmas contains splended surf guitar with the best songs Cristmas has to offer. It is a must have for any surf fan in the Christmas spirit. The highlight track of the disk is "The Twelve Days of Christmas". This track has many unexpected twists and turns that add a much needed new spin on this tune."
Surprisingly good.

"I'm actually not sure what made me buy beach-style Christmas music, but I've been getting this out every Christmas for four or five years now and I still like it.

The album contains just really upbeat instrumental Christmas music. It will definitely get you into the holiday spirit. My only problem is the last song "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." They sing it in several different languages, which is an interesting idea. But it's the only song that's not instrumental and it kind of sticks out. It feels a little like adding lyrics was a spur of the moment decision and they didn't rehearse it much. That's just one song though; the rest of the album is a lot of fun.
