CD Reviews

Excellent collection but a couple tracks are short versions
Phil (San Diego, CA) | San Diego, CA | 02/19/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There's hardly a need to post a review of a greatest hits album like this, you already know you're in for some sublime music. The only gotcha might be that some of the songs are edited versions. "Betcha By Golly Wow" and "You Make Me Feel Brand New" have around 30 and 45 seconds trimmed off respectively, and "People Make the World Go Round" loses three minutes from its original appearance on the group's first album. The instrumentation on that song creates such a good mood in the span that extends beyond the three minute mark that it's a shame it wound up getting cut short here.

The other gotcha is that a couple popular songs were not included in this brief collection, "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)" and "You'll Never Get to Heaven (If You Break My Heart)". But in this age of mp3s that's easily fixed by just downloading those individual songs.

If you find that this ten song collection leaves you wanting more, do yourself the favor of checking out the Stylistics' first album. Not only does it include the original versions of two of the three songs that were shortened for this compilation, but the rest of that album has the same appeal as its hit songs. It's a strong album, strong enough to hold its own if you burned it along with this Greatest Hits on a single CD for the car. You could probably round out a full disk by adding highlights from the second album, "Peek-A-Boo" and "You're Right As Rain". Happy listening!"
