One of if not the most successful African American groups of the 1950s, The Platters broke the mould during the course of their hit run. Whilst many of their rivals were all-male and a few were all-female line-ups, The Platters had a mixed line-up, with Zola Taylor the lone female alongside four males. This line-up proved a smash and prompted countless imitators, but few had access to the song writing abilities of Buck Ram, who also served as the group's manager, producer and booker.
