"On 11/2/96 the NY Allstars, led by trumpeter Randy Sandke, appeared in concert in Hamburg, Germany; this CD contains half the music played there that night (Volume 2, Nagel Heyer 041, has the other half). All the tunes are Basie classics. The absolute highlight is the group's version of LESTER LEAPS IN, which features the two tenors of Billy Mitchell and Brian Ogilvie duking it out. Dan Barrett, trombonist extraordinaire, takes a gorgeous muted solo on the ballad I WANT A LITTLE GIRL. Sandke takes a lovely solo on SHINY STOCKINGS, though he has kept himself out of the solo spotlight for most of the proceedings. Those who love Basie's music should be delighted with this CD. It's a gem."
