Taking its name from a mass mind-control concept from the cult sci-fi novel "Illuminatus!", The Fnords is the brainchild of one Matt Gordon, a young man who, like many, spent his childhood surrounded by cornfields and cultural dissonance. Born in San Antonio, Texas and raised near Columbus, Indiana, Gordon presents a snapshot of his talents and vision as captured in the summer of 1999 during a brief allotment of studio time on luxurious two-inch analog tape. Three of the five songs, "Third Grade," "Apocalypse in F(Tornados #2)" and "Ghost Behind the Roads" represent an experiment in lyrical and melodic improvisation, where Gordon plumbs the depths of his vast reservoir of childhood memories and symbolic free-association. The centerpiece of the collection, "Apocalypse in F(Tornados #2)" is the most dramatically orchestrated and epic of the five tracks, combining Rhodes piano, swirling Hammond organ, deep synthesizer textures and thundering percussion.
