Synopsis

While not a magnum opus like their 1994 eponymous LP, the Beatnuts' first major project, Intoxicated Demons was still a thunderous warning shot fired across hip-hop's hood ornament. Having sharpened their teeth on remixes for Chi Ali and Common, the 'Nuts decided to show the world what they were really all about--best encapsulated on the funk-nasty "Psycho Dwarf," whose anthem was: "I wanna fuck, drink beer, and smoke some shit." Though the 'Nuts were all about testosterone-laced beats, they could also finesse a smooth jazz track, like on "No Equal." Heck, even their hijacking of Hank Mobley's original Blue Note cover art was wickedly brilliant. --Oliver Wang

IT'S THE NUTS
Tino Tek | London, England | 10/02/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This ep along with their second street level were the last of the current albums that I bought together. The first beatnuts album I got was stone crazy which I bought after hearing one of my favourate tracks of all time off the books, but with that album I was introduced into the crazy smoke filled world of psycho les and ju ju.

This debut album which also featured a third member fashion now known as al tariq is a great example of what early new york rap was about, The beatnuts are producer/dj's first and have a great knowledge of crate digging which enables them to use samples which at the time (92/93) were not that known and they were able to create some nice gritty beats which serves their style very well. Their rhymes can come across as typical hollow raps but if you listen closly you will realise it is all done tongue in cheek which is definatly a good thing. A great straight to the point full of nonsence album of early ninties rap which was made during an era when most hip hop albums could do no wrong, buy it."
Intoxicating Beats

(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Beatnuts first release is this amazing EP, Intoxicated Demons. The album is full of tight beats and the MC's Juju and Les are on point with their rhymes. "Psycho Dwarf" is a brilliant song that explains the band's philosophy on life. "World Famous" is a classic braggado and "On The 1 + 2" is a great track. Intoxicated Demons is a great introduction to a heavily underrated hip hop band."
