CD Reviews

Very Sublime musical experience..
Alfred Rony Situmorang | Jakarta, Indonesia | 04/08/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As 2 most popular Piano Concertos in the whole world, it seems very hard for me at the first time to make this review. But, after listening to this CD, everything in these masterpieces is so clear and transparent. I have listened to more than 10 CDs of Tchaikovsky 1st and Rachmaninov 2nd concertos, including from Argerich, Richter, Berezovsky, Arrau, Cliburn, and so on, but none of them give me the ultimate musical experience than what Sultanov did in this CD. He showed a tremendous power of pianoplaying (listen to the opening of Tchaikovsky 1st, last octaves of Allegro con fuoco he did clean pedalings, and the last coda of Allegro Scherzando Rach.2nd at 10'30) without any banging sound, and at the same time delivered very sublime lyrical effect in every passage of the music. Of course this would not be without the very transparent musical playing from LSO with Shostakovich as the conductor. And of course for the exceptional quality from Teldec for the recording process. I still remember about his triumph at Van Cliburn Competition 1989, and for me until know he is still the best gold-medalist ever. Sometimes I asked God why he took Sultanov too early (35-yrs of age) by his death from strokes. But I got the answer, God took him because of his music is more suitable for the Heavens than this earth..So long, Alexei Sultanov. May the heavens enjoy your sublime music as we are in here.."
