I Like It Anyhow
Kurt Harding | Boerne TX | 06/01/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"When I saw the listing for this album under Astor Piazzolla and looked at the songlist, I just assumed that it was another Piazzolla compilation of versions of his early classics but performed with his much later Conjunto 9. Despite the fact that it is listed as a Piazzolla album, Astor's touch is nowhere to be found. What I did find was a CD full of interesting interpretations of Piazzolla's music by a group which calls itself Tango No. 9. Quite a few of my favorite Piazzolla compositions are here: Chau Paris, Marron y Azul, Preparense, Tanguango, and Bando just to name a few. The play is sensual and spirited throughout and the trombone of Greg Stephens adds an interesting twist. Odile Lavault on bandoneon of course is no match for Piazzolla himself but her play exudes its own charm. One can tell by listening to All Them Cats in Recoleta that the musicians love playing Piazzolla and in spite of the fact that this is very different from the Piazzolla I have come to know, I like it anyhow."
