Arturo Toscanini's 1937 BBC Pastorale has an ebb and flow, disciplined flexibility, and unbridled congeniality absent from his tighter 1952 NBC remake. On the other hand, his 1939 BBC Fourth is atypically foursquare and remote compared to the Maestro's more profiled later version. Arkadia's adequate transfers will do as a stopgap until EMI remasters this material from its best sources. --Jed Distler
