One of the best 5ths out there
Gregory M. Zinkl | Chicago, IL | 04/25/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Of the Sibelius 5ths that I've heard (and no, I haven't heard Barbirolli), this recording and von Karajan (EMI, not DG) own it. While Karajan is impressive with his control, overall conception, and majestic sweep, Maazel elicits a more personal, emotional response. Both orchestras--Berlin Phil. and Pittsburgh--execute the performances with superb polish, characterful solos, and delicacy and passion where appropriate. The final section of the 5th, starting with the scurrying strings, really makes my heart stop. Sibelius composed a work that grows organically, and the finale just caps this magnificient opus. The horn motif that repeats is wonderful in both conductor's recording, but it's Maazel who gets to the tears. The string playing is breath-taking, and the final climax just takes it out of me. It is a wonderful performance.Oddly, this second complete cycle by Maazel has received mostly lukewarm praise, but I find this recording of the 5th far superior to his mostly wonderful set with the Vienna Phil. That set boasts a really excellent 1st and 4th, but the 5th...well, let's just say that the finale leaves something to be desired--a harsh, driven affair that leaves the music bruised black and blue.Von Karajan gets the thumbs up for conception and sweep; Maazel for beauty and emotion. Can't go wrong with either!"
