Synopsis

These are pretty performances of very pretty music. If you think that Mozart's symphonies should sound a bit more dangerous and exciting than Herbert von Karajan's soft-edged approach permits, there are many other versions by Szell, Walter, Böhm, and others that will gratify your desire. If Karajan's your man, then these EMI recordings are more interesting than his DG versions of the same music, and they're mid-price too. --David Hurwitz

CD Reviews

Pretty music, lovely performances

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Don't let David Hurwitz' condescension fool you. These are wonderful performances of three relatively well-known symphonies by Mozart. Karajan has been touted, and rightly so, as a superlative interpreter of "big-band" Mozart, and you really must hear these performances. You won't be sorry. And, as good as Szell is in No. 35, Karajan much more successfully brings out the beauty in Mozart's art."
