Synopsis

Given his outstanding credentials as a Mahler conductor, it should come as no surprise that Otto Klemperer's performance of Berlioz's youthful, hallucinogenic masterpiece is one of the best around. Typically, his tempos are rather slow in quick movements, and surprisingly quick in the central slow movement, but this doesn't in any way dampen the excitement he creates in the "March to the Scaffold" and final "Witches' Sabbath." In fact, Klemperer's preference for up-close focus on the woodwinds and his love of dark sounds adds a real touch of gothic horror to the work's most grotesque moments, and the Philharmonia plays with 100 percent commitment. A classic. --David Hurwitz

CD Reviews

I can't believe it!

"I love Klemp. I had to get this. It took me so long to find this disc, but I found it and I got it. And man was I in for a real shocker! I can't believe Klemp! He REALLY outdoes himself in this recording! THE BEST BERLIOZ I HAVE EVER HEARD!
I never knew Klemperer could be so mysterious and so fiery! I heard things in this that I never heard before in other Symphony Fantastique's. It has the all the excitement of a live performance with all the power that you need in this work. The Humperdinck pieces on this are so good too, beautifully played with a type of spirituality of a Wagner opera.
GET THIS IMMEDIATLY...IF YOU EVER SEE IT!"
