Take A Chance If You Love Good Music (& You Can Afford It!)
Charles L. Hubbert | Milwaukee, WI | 09/08/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Here it is, the middle of the summer in 2006, and there is absolutely no new R&B to check out. R&B in America seems to be at a standstill. So naturally, you must search for some worthwhile music to check out, even if it did come out some time ago. Enter Sy Smith, the most known unknown there is when it comes to soul music. We've all heard her music or someone else singing the lyrics to the songs that she has written. You remember the theme song of the cable series Soul Food? Yep, that was her singing alongside Al Green for the show's opening number. What about the songstress that blessed numerous episodes of Ally McBeal? Her again! She even did back up singing for Usher, Brandy, and the incomparable Whitney Houston (before the diva started living up to the slogan 'This is your brain on drugs.') With all those projects as well as a slew of others, you would think that Sy Smith would be the number one soul artist in the world right now. In some people's minds, she probably is. And with The Syberspace Social, she further demonstrates her ingenuity and non-conforming approach to soul singing.

Every track on The Syberspace Social has a unique flair all its own. "Fa' Sho" will put you in a funky stratosphere right away. "Time" follows suit with a trip-hop voyage led by Sy herself. "Part of the Night" features a familiar sound brought forth by ATCQ's own Ali Shaheed Muhammed. Other standout tracks include the soulful "Luvandsuch," the lounge feel of "Drop That," the toe-tapping beat of "Aquarius Rising," and the futuristic sounds of both "Turnstyles" and "No Place Like Love."

Sy Smith does it like no other singer can. Some artists have tried to do albums like this and failed miserably (any later albums by Macy Gray for instance). This import-only album is worth the money if you truly are looking for an authentic one-of-a-kind soul escapade. The Syberspace Social may not be easily accessible, but it is certainly impressive enough for all to enjoy."
I love Sy Smith

"I just discovered Sy over the summer and upon doing so have i found my new favorite artist... I am in love with this cd...its a feel good and funky song masterpiece...the more emotional cut Bruise is beautiful...Aquarius Rising,Turnstyles and Fa sho, Honeychild, and Drop That...are my absolute favorites...This cd has taken up permanent resident in my ride and travels with me to the gym to get my treadmill on, in singing pleasure...Witty lyrics and slick funk jazzy grooves earns this cd a 5 star..."
Welcome 2 Syberspace!

"Sy Smith's Syberspace Social is one of the best recommendations Amazon had made to me! I was looking for someone with a different sound/style/voice, and enters Sy. This was a great purchase. I also picked up her first CD Psykosoul Plus and LOVE IT too! I wholeheartedly recommend picking up both of her CDs. If you are a fan of the likes of Lina, Amel, Conya Doss, N'Dambi, etc. then you will definitely enjoy Sy. It may be hard to find but worth it (I found both reasonably priced at cdbaby.com).

Syberspace Social has a futuristic feel as far as the production and her voice, which is excellent! Her voice is sometimes airy and nice...it's beautiful. I'm also a fan of her lyrics (from BOTH CDs).

Fave tracks:

* Welcome 2 Syberspace - This is THE perfect opening for the CD. It gives you a taste of what to expect. It's one of my favorites on the CD. Go for the ride :-)

* Fa Sho' - Trippy, groovy song

* Aquarius Rising - Another trip-hop sounding song...you just gotta hear it for yourself. Futuristic sounding vocals...cool song

* Time - I love the spacey sound effects and as usual, her beautiful voice. This song reminds me of something I could hear Amel singing.

* Love and Such - Yes! Nice groove, I like the hook too. (Am I naming EVERY song on the CD so far??? It's THAT good!)

* Dreamtrip - I REALLY LIKE THIS SONG! I think it's my FAVORITE just because of it's trippy beat and sounds, and the way she sings over the beat...wow. LOVE IT!

* Bruise - An emotional ballad where her voice really brings the song home. The lyrics..."I bruise so easily...I bleed internally..." Check it out.

Honorable Mention - Turnstyles, Runnin', Stand Alone, Lover's Crime

I really hope to hear more from Sy. I was VERY excited to have picked up this purchase...just like Lina's 3 CDs.

Enjoy Syberspace~"
