CD Reviews

Horrific, hilarious...a mirror to life

"This unclassifiable, dissonant music is overwhelmed by the power of its lyrics. What sounds like house-of-horrors carnival kitsch combined with polka, rock and improv jazz (I'm sorry I'm not too genre-savvy here, but I also think SCG cannot be described beyond "experimental") clashes amusingly with the darkly humorous words. Lyricist/singer etc. Charles Gocher is a brilliant and manipulative author. I put the CD insert, which contains some amazing prose, on my bookshelf next to my copy of the original Divine Comedy. And Gocher is also a comedic, Dadaist, disinformative author. Yet Dante's Disneyland Inferno inevitably brought Nietzsche to mind: "We have art in order not to die of truth." Obviously the men of Sun City Girls are artists, and have been overexposed to the dark side of truth. Likewise if you listen here in earnest, the same may happen to you. If you can laugh at this, you're a healthy human being. If you can see in all seriousness that SCG's "Floppy Pus" is just as much a song of peace as da Palestrina's "Sicut Cervus"...then you may be divine ;) Recommended if you're on any kind of search for something. It's not music, not literature...but it is definitely art, and philosophy."
