CD Reviews

60% of what must have been a great concert!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"First, all the positives. The current lineup with mainstays Herb Murrell & Airrion Love, along with newer members Van Fields and Russell Thompkins Jr. replacement/soundalike Harold "Ebon" Brown do a great job of keeping the Stylistics going strong into the 21st century.

The group is in fine form throughout this 10 song live set. Every performance is good. Many, particularly "You Make Me Feel Brand New," "I'm Stone in Love With You," "Rockin' Roll Baby," and "Break Up to Make Up" are great. It's an unexpected treat to hear live versions of "You're a Big Girl Now" and "Heavy Fallin' Out."

There's no point in going into great detail about the songs. These are fine live versions of the hits you remember. I've found many of these budget cds to be a waste of money. This cd however is worth the price and more.

The only downside is that listening to this cd makes you long for an extended live cd on these guys. There's a recent Dramatics live cd for comparison where they cover pretty much every hit they ever had.

You'll love what's here, but what's here will make you long for more. If you put this with those 70's Soul Jam cd/dvds that came out a couple years back, you'll have the equivalent of a 'full' Stylistics concert because most of what you would miss here can be found there.

The strong performances for the ridiculously low price make this a FIVE STAR effort.

Highest Recommendation under that criteria.

It deserves Four Stars under any criteria.

And if anyone's out there with influence...give us a VOLUME 2 of Stylistics Live, please.
