What You Need To Know
Cary E. Mansfield | Studio City, CA USA | 11/15/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Bluest Eyes showcases the commanding vocals of Malford Milligan, fronting STORYVILLE, an amazing all-star band (all native Texans) who originally came together at Antone's Nightclub in Austin, TX. Bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton played in Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble and The Arc Angels. Rhythm guitarist David Grissom played in Joe Ely's backing band.

Produced by guitarist STEPHEN BRUTON (Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, T Bone Burnett). Bluest Eyes won six awards at the 1995 Austin Music Awards, including Best Band and Best Single. The album was rated highly in mainstream publications upon its initial release. This album has been out of print for over six years and has become highly sought-after. This CD reissue features the original album art, and includes new liner notes.

What a Voice!

"Malford Milligan is my personal favourite singer. He has such a rich and powerful, soulful voice brought on by his gospel upbringing. All Storyville CDs (A piece of your Soul and Dog Years) are well worth their weight in gold, but "Bluest Eyes" holds a special place in my CD Collection. Great Rockers in "One rock at a time", "Wings won't let me fly" and "Long way to midnight" , but it is the overly beautiful songs "Carry you home", "Water" and most specially the Classic "A change is gonna come". It is also interesting to note also that Double Troubles Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon do not appear TOGETHER for a change. Layton plays on 5 of the 13 tracks, with Shannon accompanying him on only one. Malford has other side-projects worth checking out in the form of The Boneshakers, The Malford Milligan Band etc."
