CD Reviews

The best themes are missing
Paris Huang | 06/02/2001
(3 out of 5 stars)

"All round this is a good CD, with the exception that two very prominent themes in the episode are not featured on the CD. The theme from the introduction of Voyager by the pilot Stadi, and the theme for when the ship disengages from Deep Space Nine and launches are both missing - quite frankly I dont understand why. The ship launching surely is one of the most stand out moments of the series, so don't ask me why its not on the soundtrack."

"Jerry Goldsmith's theme is awesome and Jay Chattaway (who I have been a fan of ever since I first heard his score for William Lustig's Maniac) contributes a nice, if fairly routine, sci-fi score. Both fans of the series and of the composers will want to have it. Recommended."

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I was very surprised to see Jerry Goldsmith's name attached to "Star Trek: Voyager". Well, there is nothing wrong with that, except that we're talking about a TV show. No matter, Goldsmith's main title is one of the best themes "Star Trek" has ever offered. Goldsmith's signature instrument -the French horn -plays the sweeping notes that cromprise such a wonderful and epic track.

Later we have a treat of one of the Next Generation's composers. Jay Chattaway provides a suspenseful yet interesting composition. 'Prologue' and 'Escape From The Ocampa Underground' are the best action tracks. We are also treated to the banjo at the beginning of 'Lifesigns In The Barn' and 'The Caretaker's Hoedown', such interesting use in a sci-fi show. The only thing that bothers me, however, is that you get to hear so many influences of Dennis McCarthy that you start doubting if this is a true Chattaway original.

In the end, this is one fine album. And the things that keep the spirit of "Star Trek" on foot is Jerry Goldsmith's theme and the aforementioned action music."
