CD Reviews

Excellent Import Anthology of California Garage Punk
J. E FELL | Carterville, Illinois United States | 12/24/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

""Hot Hits & Hot Ones: Is This The Way You Get You High? is an import compilation of the Standells work from 1965-1967. This set includes three more tracks than the more easily available Rhino "Best Of". This set includes three great cover tunes not included on that set. Covers of the Rolling Stones "19th Nervous Breakdown" and "Paint It Black" and the Troggs "Wild Thing" are essential. Their best known hits "Dirty Water", "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White" and "Why Pick On Me" are also included. Cuts like "Medication", "Try It", "Barracuda" and "Riot On Sunset Strip" are impressive. The music is Stonesish rock. The slashing fuzz guitar of Tony Valentino and organ of Larry Tamblyn are the distinctive features of the band. The last few cuts are weaker than their earlier material and illustrate the change in the band's stance from aggressive rock to a more soul based sound favored by vocalist/drummer Dick Dodd. A later non-recording edition of the band even featured the pre-Little Feat slide guitar master Lowell George. Another plus is the great liner notes as well as some photos of the band with the sixties edition of the Rolling Stones who they were opening for at the time."
Great Standells Compilation!

"Standells were among the most exciting American garage/punk bands of the middle sixties. A shame their recording career went on for so short a period. 4 albums on 3 years and some singles.

This collection includes most of their finest moments such as, "Dirty Water", "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White", "Medication", "Mr Nobody", "Animal Girl", "Try It", "Barracuda" etc. In fact most of it is great. Seek out other Standells releases as well!!"

"Total of 21 smokin' tracks of one of the most under rated bands of the '60's.I mean, shouldn't these guys have had more than just one hit?You listen to this CD and decide for youself.Could not get enough of "Dirty Water","Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White","Riot On Sunset Strip",their two Stones covers-"19th Nervous Breakdown" and "Paint It Black" as well as "Barracuda"(my personal Standells tune)and the trippy "Animal Girl".Superb all American garage rock and roll to be thoroughly enjoyed here.Recommended.A true keeper."
