No one has captured the essence of 20th-century Danish music better than Nielsen (1865-1931). His music draws from the indigenous folk music sources of Scandinavia and he remains immensely popular. Springtime in Funen (1921) was composed during the same period that saw his incredible Symphony 5, but none of that work's tempestuousness is here. Springtime is a choral symphony and a full-bore celebration of the people (and seasons) on the isle of Funen, based on the poetry of Danish poet Aage Berntsen. Suite from Aladdin (1918) is from a failed stage play. The music is both Danish and Middle Eastern. Wow. --Paul Cook
