Synopsis

Album Description
Creators of refined and original albums, Spirit are undoubtedly one of the most interesting groups in the panorama of American rock, thanks to drummer Ed Cassidy (ex-jazz drummer) and guitarist Randy California (friend of Jimi Hendrix, from whom he had obviously learned a great number of tricks). This album came to life between '91 and '95, but it is not a collection, it is a real album and of high quality. The guitar of Randy California flies free from the first track, "Shake My Ego," featuring a Hendrix-style intro, while "Compromise" is a track that is 100% Spirit. "Close To You," features Jazz-styled improvisations, while "Mean And Beautiful," is again in the style of a certain well-known lefty from Seattle. The passing of Randy California in January 1997 was a hard blow for all of us who have loved his extraordinary musicianship, but his music lives on and it is with great honor that we propose Cosmic Smile, definitely one of the best releases in Akarma label history.

Randy California (Wolfe) Lives On!
CrimZap | Southeast, USA | 01/09/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Yes, R. California (California name given to him by Hendrix to distinguish between the two Randys in his pre-Experience band) lives on. I'm not much of a reviewer, but I've always been a Spirit fan. A lot of their early music was overlooked, but not even close to their later music. This is a sad shame because there is a massive amount of music released after California's death...and more yet to be released. If you are just rediscovering Spirit, check this cd out. It has a great variety of styles (as was Spirit's way from the very beginning) and it is an enjoyable listen. Did I like it all? No, but I did like the majority of it. I'll leave it to that. I'm no music critic and what little I don't like on a cd, someone else will love. Buy this! You'll enjoy most of it if not all...and the stuff you don't enjoy you'll appreciate!"
