CD Reviews

For the City of New Orleans
Markus Pacal | Austin, TX | 05/30/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Speedbuggy USA are a working-class band. They're not rock stars. They don't mount huge stadium tours. And they can't make a living off of their music. They all have regular jobs and get together as Speedbuggy USA when time permits. Which makes this record very, very special.

Timbo, Speedbuggy USA's main man, is originally from Louisiana. So due to the horrible devastation brought by Hurricane Katrina to his home state, he decided to make a record in hopes of offering some solace to those people. And not just through music. All profits from this cd were donated to Habitat for Humanity-Katrina Relief Fund. And for a working class band, that's really sticking your neck out there & putting your money where your mouth is. Many props go out to this band for making such a gesture.

The record itself is more of the same from what you've come to expect. There's not as much hard-driving cow punk that they showcased on their first 2 discs. There's some straight-up country, that surfaced on their 2nd disc, "Round Up." Basically, "The City That God Forgot" has a whole lotta mid-tempo numbers with a couple of instrumentals tossed in the mix. It's definitely a bit of a concept record and should be listened to in it's entirety. If you're a fan of this band, you've got 2 reasons to go out and get it: 1)It's another great disc by an under-appreciated band & 2)Your cash will help the people of NOLA, who are still suffering nearly 4 years after Hurricane Katrina hit."
