Synopsis

Album Description
"Far from a retrospective recording, however, Songs for Ariel is a vibrant performance that amply demonstrates the continuing vitality and beauty of Bowman's voice." -- Opera Today In 2005, after several years of absence from the recording world, James Bowman recorded this very English recital program covering five centuries of music, which proved to be his last solo recording. The repertoire covers many aspects of his long and distinguished career, about which the liner notes and an interview with musicologist Richard Langham Smith reveal some secrets. As accompanist, Bowman chose American harpsichordist/pianist Kenneth Weiss, with whom he has been giving recitals for many years. The booklet includes photos from Bowman's childhood and from various opera productions.

CD Reviews

A counter-tenor Legend

(5 out of 5 stars)

"On this disc Bowman takes us on a tour throughout his career. His songs reflect the people and music that were pertinent in throughout his singing. Now he his late 60's his voice may suffer a little, but for a Bowman fan this is a must. The only instruments backing him are a harpsichord and piano. A very meloncholic and reflective disc. I give 5 stars because of the singer and what he has meant for the counter-tenor world. If you aren't a Bowman fan, this probably isn't the disc for you, but if you are this is a must for your collection. You'll hear theat familiar voice, and colors he has always portrayed in his music.
