Search - Hindemith, Mori, Gisler-Haase :: Sonatas for Woodwind

This enterprising Japanese label went to Germany and Austria to record a group of Hindemith's wind sonatas with a group of outstanding musicians, including the legendary Karl Leister. Perhaps the fact that each wind player has his or her own piano collaborator indicates that their obvious familiarity with the music comes from recital experience. In any case, none of these performances sounds like something put together in a recording studio; all the players are obviously strongly involved with the music. This disc could have held another sonata or two, and Hindemith's wind sonatas aren't everyone's favorites anyway. But what's here is all very well done. --Leslie Gerber
