CD Reviews

The Return Of The Soft Boys

(4 out of 5 stars)

"At last fans of the Soft Boys (or Robyn Hitchcock) can have a live album to call their own.Even if you have the Ryko double 76-81, there is still more on this import. As far as I know the only repeat tracks are from different shows and the quality is excellent.Highlights include a version of The Byrds "Bells of Rhymney" and if your a big fan of the "Can of Bees" album the versions on this album are excellent. If you are even a casual,or new fan this disc comes highly recomended."
HAVE THE CLONES BEEN RE-ROUTED?

"Virtually any recordings involving Robyn Hitchcock are of an exceptional quality both musically and lyrically and it is great to see the wider release of this originally bootleg (official?)live Soft Boys album which showcases some of their manic psycho-punk classics, most notably Anglepoise Lamp,Give It To The Soft Boys and Wading Through A Ventilator. These early tracks and the more refined brilliance of most of the Underwater Moonlight LP have undoubtedly had a positive influence on many indie artists of the last two decades.Another Hitchcock element which usually lacks scrutiny, his humour and sense of fun,is plainly evident on the cover versions eg.I Like Bananas.Maybe members of bands who revere the Soft Boys could take this element on board.....By the way the CD would deserve a five star rating if it didn't suffer from the usual muddy live album syndrome !!!"
