CD Reviews

Through poppy fields and icy dawns

"Yes, I can tell you something about this mysterious CD-single. Not dissimilar to related bands like Lush, Ride, or Cocteau Twins, some of Slowdive's best material has appeared on singles and EPs. But it's very difficult to find CD-singles by Slowdive since the band is defunct and has been dropped by Creation Records after the release of its third album "Pygmalion". "Morningrise" is a 3-track EP which features the title track, "She calls", and "Losing today". I think these songs are very good and a little more colorful than those of SD's first album "Just for a day". "Losing today" prefigures the ambient-oriented sound of "Pygmalion". The lyrics are a bit wrecked with depression ("She's waiting for her heart to break"), but Rachel's airy voice breathes enough life into the ambitious soundscapes. I guess Slowdive have released about eight EPs and CD-singles, an extract of seven songs from the first three EPs("Slowdive", "Morningrise", "Holding our breath") can be found on the compilation "Blue day". "Outside your room" contains two tracks from "Souvlaki", a remix version of "Souvlaki Space Station", and the fantastic non-album track "So tired". Slowdive's last EP release "5EP (In mind - Remixes)" rather leans towards techno/dark ambient sounds. In retrospect, it's not easy to understand why Slowdive was such a short-lived (if also prolific) venture."
One of the Best---a Must Have

"If you can get your hands on this gem then by all means do so. This is one of those must have CD's in anyones collection that is into the short lived genre of music known as Shoegaze. This one is a a must have. Swirling, spacey, trippy music, with awesome female and male vocals. I had the chance to catch them live and it was a show that will live with me forever."
Easiest of the rare singles to find; worth every penny...

"Yes, "Morningrise" follows up after 'Just for a Day', and predates 'Souvlaki', but has as many similarities to on as much as the other.'She Calls' was a favourite song for the band to perform live, and it's just as beautiful here in it's studio incarnation. 'Losing Today' is definitely more ambient in feel and sound, but still isn't half bad--and the title track wouldn't have felt out of place on the debut LP.It's definitely worth picking up; only receiving 4 stars because it is MERELY a single, and not a complete album, and as such, however excellent, it's merely branches of a much more phenomenal body of work. See if you can hook onto 'Blue Day', which collects the band's first three singles, and puts them into a bit better perspective."
