CD Reviews

OK, but not the best...
TchaikJP | Houston, TX United States | 07/16/1999

"Andre Previn is definetely a noteworthy conductor, however he can't match the Tchaikovsky insight that Antal Dorati has. This recording seems to lengthen the ballet even more than the almost 3 hours it already is. If you are looking for Sleeping Beauty in a dynamic, clear recoding with 2 jam-packed CD's for the price of one, I suggested looking for Sleeping Beauty as conducted by Antal Dorati and remastered by RCA. Dorati's stressed stings, and gutty attack on the music bring out the beauty of the Russian-ness of the ballet. Don't miss out on a deal like that just because you know the name Previn."
A Great performance of a great ballet score.

"Tchaikovsky's music for the ballet The Sleeping Beauty is not only one of the greatest ballet scores ever written, it is also one of the greatest pieces of music in any genre ever written. If you love classical music, especially music from the Romantic period, please get this musical masterpiece even if you think that you are not interested in ballet. This is the finest performance of The Sleeping Beauty which I have ever heard. Only the outstanding performance by Richard Bonynge approaches this one. But fine as Bonynge's performance is, Previn's is better. My one caveat is that the sound of this performance, while quite acceptable, is not state-of the art. But if outstanding performance is more important to you than state-of-the art sonics, this is the version of The Sleeping Beauty to own."
