Absurdly Beautiful
Sean Coxen | Hyattsville, MD United States | 09/19/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Karel Sejna is not as well known in the West as his compatriots Talich, Ancerl, Kubelik or Neumann, but this need not deter listeners from buying his set of Slavonic Dances, arguably the best of the lot. Nearly all the afficionadi whose comments I've read rate his set in the top five; many go so far as to give it the number one slot.

And why not? Sejna is leading the Czech Czech Philharmonic here in 1959 when it was still heavily under the influence of Talich (of whom Sejna was a favorite pupil) and delivering the right sort of rustic sound to bring out the true spirit of the music and its composer. The 1959 stereo sound is stunningly good, richly conveying the acoustic of the Rudolfinum's Dvorak Hall and Sejna's superb sense of balance, proportion and discreet nuance. He does not make of these dances fiery showpieces the way some (particularly Hungarian) conductors do, but they are exuberant, full of life and varigated color, perfectly phrased. Each line of this familiar music sounds fresh and rendered anew. The disc clocks in at 71 minutes, the same as the animated Kubelik on his justly legendary Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra performances.

The notes include a good bio on Sejna, a weak essay on the work, and the dance forms are not identified -- i.e., skocna, kolo, dumka, polka, furiant, etc. I wish this could have been rectified. All the same, do NOT miss this legendary and absurdly beautiful performance."
Even if you have the Classic Talich 50's version...

"Richly idiomatic, with the Czech "lilt" achieved only by Czech conductors. The Talich version is my desert island version, but I would never part with Sejna's reading which is its very close equal. And it so happens, these Dvorak Dances are among the freshest, most enduring works ever composed. They have been a source of pleasure and delight for the last 40 years !"
