Sir Douglas Quintet Plus 2/Honkey Blues

"God bless the folks who decided to issue this album and the other original Mercury/Smash records for Sir Douglas. They are worth having. George Rains, Wayne Talbert and the horn section stand out on this album, along with Doug Sahm's soulful vocals. Who cares if the words occasionally wander into wooly 1968 imagery, the music is tight and sophisticated (I still recall playing this album 30 years ago to my dorm neighbors, who were shocked by the brilliant playing. "Is that really the Sir Douglas Quintet?" one asked). The original record was short even by late 1960s standards, so the reissue thoughtfully includes three bonus tracks from the long out-of-print "Rough Edges" album. Ed Ward's liner notes are informative. Who could ask for more?"

"Fantastic CD. Very left field, sounds like what it is...a Texan lands in San Francisco in the 60's and jams. Great horns and grooves. If you're an experimenter, this one is for you!!!"
