The real diamond

"this CD is a kind of "greatest hits" of Hermann Prey. And it's realy hits that's truly greatest. Unique "velvet" voice, perfect musicality and strong personality (I can't remember another classical singer so sensual yet masculine) make me a fan.
CD is divided into two parts, first one - opera arias, second - lieder. Both exciting, though operatic part seems too brief to portrait such an outstanding singer. The second part is just wonderful: from exquisite Schumann ("Meine rose" is just incredible!) to breathtaking R.Strauss.
This is a real diamond in the ocean of boring mediocrity."
A true "Master" singer!

"This is a delicious cd. I have listened to it countless times, and each time I do, I find something new to appreciate. Hermann Prey, while some argue should have sung tenor, shows with his fine baritone voice, a very personable sense to "high" art. He sings the challenging Strauss pieces with such ease and fluidity, without the stodgy haughtiness and sense of indulgence that too many take to this music. Granted, it is difficult, but Prey never reminds the listener of this - instead he sings, completely immersed in the poetry. His warm rendition of "Heimkehr" rivals that of Fischer-Dieskau (in my humble opinion). "Allerseelen" is sung with so much longing and repressed sadness, but retains the perfect musicality throughout the empassioned final, sweeping phrases. Then there is the impeccable, glowing performance of "Standchen" which alone is worth the price of this VERY affordable disc. All of the selections are beyond fantastic (He is, afterall, the definitive Papageno...), but it is the German Art Songs, especially the Strauss, that illuminate the incredible instrument of this honey-toned man."
Thanks for the beautiful music
