Good Variety

(4 out of 5 stars)

"The Shrine Choir sings very nicely for the most part on this recording. The variety of Marian texts and settings are interspersed with some organ improvisations. The are some really exquisite moments, such as "Virgin Great and Glorious" and Britten's "Hymn to the Virgin." The Reichwein "Ave Maris Stella" is the most tonally ambiguous work on the recording, and contributes an avant-garde element.

But perhaps in late-night recording sessions, some really poor vocalism has slipped inder the radar, notably in the Palistrina "Ave Maria."

Overall, the Shrine Choir has chosen the repertoire they do best and expoited it to full potential on this album. Certainly worth your fifteen bucks."
