CD Reviews

The best available recording, and its live!
ecampana@sinfo.net | Panama | 01/22/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is one of my favorite operas, because the lower voices are the most important in order for this work to be succesful; Renato Bruson is in excellent voice, his performance is full of pathos and smooth singing, specially in the famous Council chamber scene (Plebe, patrizi, popolo!!), and he is joined by Katia Ricciarelli's sweet voiced Amelia, R. Raimondi dark and vengeful Fiesco and Veriano Luchetti's excellent Adorno, who, interestingly enough, was substituting for an indisposed Carreras. The recorded sound is excellent for a live performance, and Claudio Abbado's conducting highlights the score most beautiful moments, specially in the strings (the Vienna Philharmonic sounds heavenly). I believe that this is the best recorded performance of this work, as a whole and individual performances analyzed. Lets hope that RCA issues more live recordings from the vaults of the Austrian Radio. Highly reccomended."
