CD Reviews

First Listen, Second Listen
J. Miller | Earth | 04/14/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a second listen album (like Second Coming by second coming). It isn't that bad on the first listen, but this is an up and down pace album that will blow you away each listen after the first.

On the other hand, you may throw this down and hate it after just one listen. It doesn't quite have a thorough edge like some 'chair fans might want and it doesn't have the incredible melody hooks of the third album Neon Ballroom either.

If you finally enjoy this, it will be for the outstanding composition and placement of the musical talent of this band throughout the songs. Keep in mind that this may not sound together as an album to most people, but that you AND critics should generally love it (not unlike Weezer's Make Believe album Make Believe).

Bottom line is that this is a great album whether you think it is a great Silverchair album or even whether you like Silverchair at all or not."
SILVERCHAIR DOES IT AGAIN!!
Anthony B. Collins | Dayton, OH | 04/09/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Wow what an album! Silverchair easily strikes gold once again on their latest outing--Young Modern. From the ambitious, locomotive pace of 'Young Modern Station' to the brilliant, beautifully arranged finale 'All Across the World' this album has it all--and everything in between. A couple of personal favorites would have to be- If you keep losing sleep , Waiting all day, Mind Reader, and of course, the epic Those Theiving Birds, which is in my opinion their best song thus far. Although some have said that tracks 6 thru 9 didnt 'fit in' with the rest of the album--I found that to be true, but not a problem. With the exception of waiting all day, the 'clapton-esqe' riffs and 'springsteen-ish' chorus's of the last half dont really 'fit it' with the massive orchestral arrangments--but after a few spins i found them to be some of the most addictive. Like any record it has its flaws, but, its been decades since anything this great has come along--five stars all the way."
It Grows On You....
Daniel Johns Chair Fan | Northern California | 05/15/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"....And then you love it!!! I know I do. After reading some of the customer reviews for this CD, I was a bit worried that I wouldn't like it. I really loved "Diorama", and I couldn't imagine not loving their new CD just as much, but it was hard to ignore the negative comments. I admit, I did need to listen to it 4 or 5 times before I fell in love with the songs, and now I always have them running through my head. So if you don't like it at first, give it a few more chances. If you appreciate the musical genius of Daniel Johns as much as I do, you'll grow to love "Young Modern" too.

It's definitely different from anything they've ever done, but you can tell it's the same guys. Daniel Johns' voice is as beautiful as ever, as are the playing skills of his band-mates! Of course, my personal favorites are the songs that start out slow, then move into an upbeat, catchy melody, and calm down again- just brilliant. There's something for everyone in this one: dance tracks, epic musical journeys, folksy beats, and eccentric sound effects. Johns said he believes this is Silverchair's best work to date. I'm still torn on that one, but I think they are really growing with each album, and this is another favorite for me!

I got the special edition CD with the DVD on it, and I would highly recommend this version! It gives a much anticipated glimpse into the creation of Young Modern, and any Silverchair fan would appreciate getting to see how the band thinks and acts."
