Not just another two-fer

"Akeo Watanabe and the Japan Philharmonic may seem like an unlikely group to offer up Sibelius. But his mother was Finnish, and he knows this music quite well. His old complete set was issued on Epic in the mid-1960s, and has been reissued on Sony.

This set is a different recording than that earlier effort. Some of the tempos are a tad more deliberate, as the timings will show. But the playing is improved and the sound is better, as one would expect from Denon. The symphonies are 1, 2, 5 and 7. Unlike the Epic/Sony recording, the two CDs are filled out with the Swan of Tuonela and Valse Triste. One may not need yet another recording of either of these works, but they are well played and worth acquiring. Even though I have the Epic/Sony recordings on order, I won't be giving these recordings up.

Watanabe's way with the music is to make it all breathe with a logic and passion that bring the music to life. He does not indulge in the taffy-pulling that others use, but he isn't rigid either. One senses that this is how the music should go.

Highly Recommended!"
