Synopsis

Hummel's Quintet was the inspiration for Schubert's "Trout" Quintet (written for the same combination of instruments.) It's a pleasant, brief divertimento that sounds like early Mendelssohn--not Hummel's most significant music, but entertaning. Here it is paired with a half hour of mid-Romantic glittering generalities concocted by the obscure British composer Henri Jérôme Bertini (1798-1876). Performances are fine, but for the same price as this brief disc (an LP program) you get the Hummel, the Schubert Quintet, and two Schumann masterpieces on a two-fer from Hyperion (CDD22008), just as well played and obviously a much better buy. --Leslie Gerber
