"Gian Carlo Menotti was a leader in 20th Century opera. Being associated with theatre all his life, he naturally felt comfortable in the dance medium as well. This brought to fruitation his 1944 ballet "Sebastian". Set in 17th Century Venice, it is a tale of jealousy, sacrifice, and black magic. Sebastian a Moorish slave dies to save the life of a courtesan in love with a prince. Her two possesive sisters plan to disrupt the affair by killing her magically without implication.

This is the subject Menotti prettily orchestrates with brief romantic themes of melody scarred by percussive effects of violence. The LSO along with Stokowski protege Jose Serebrier's direction, I suppose do the best that can be done with such minimal material. The notes state that this is the only complete ballet recording. The composer had previously issued a concert suite. American composer Otto Luening interest lies in the possibilities of electronics in music but he has composed over 200 works. Some being for string orchestra and solo instrument. His "Lyric Scene" with solo flute and "Legend" with oboe are contemporary conventional in development without radical devices. The strings of the Oslo Philharmonic provide subtle to lively support for the innovative techniques composed for the soloists."
