Passionately Late-Romantic Skryabin...
Sébastien Melmoth | Hôtel d'Alsace, PARIS | 09/27/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

".

Gould's reading of Scriabin's Third Sonata (Op. 23 [1898]) in the remote twilight key of f#-minor is deeply (late-)Romantic and incredibly satisfying.

Gould had a great left hand, and its skill is particularly evident in this piece with its Brahmsian dark undertones. Overall Gould expands the time-scale of the work by ~+:04mins., but this is so cunningly spread throughout the Sonata that it's not especially evident: this is GG's gestalt-concept and his incredible digital dexterity. The inner voicing is wonderful.

The aristocratic effeminate Scriabin--pupil of Taneyev and Arensky--is said to have described a programme for his four-movement Third Sonata: (i) suffering and strife; (ii) illusory respite; (iii) inexpressible feeling; (iv) nothingness...
