Ervín Schulhoff--Modernist, Dadaist, Jewish communist, Czech patriot, jazz enthusiast--(oh boy, did the NAZIs ever hate this guy!)--concentration camp victim (d. 1942)--was one of the most talented of the musicians suppressed during the regime of the "Third Reich."

Most interesting, this disc features :15mins of recordings of his own music Schulhoff made for Polydor (the original Deutsche Grammophon) in Berlin, 1928. The sound is remarkably excellent, with little surface noise. Schulhoff was a very fine pianist, and his subtle use of the pedal is notable.

Important historical artifact: American-influenced jazz filtered through central-eastern European aesthetic sensibilities.
