CD Reviews

Glorious Schubert!!!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Schubert Piano Trios are among the Best in that Genre. Both the Trios are Large scale works capturing the Drama of Human Existence-The Struggle,Loneliness,Hope,Desperation,Good Natured Acceptance. As Henry David Thoreau said-"Most men live lives of Quiet Desperation!Behind the facade of optimism, short lived happiness, there lurks the fear of loneliness! The sensitive Spirit of Franz Schubert explores this loneliness!Franz Schubert,What a Composer!Truly unique in his Lyrical outpourings that bares his very soul. The Trios are full of Gorgeous Melodies.

Schubert is often accused of "Repeating" themes.Glenn Gould Mentions how he could never "come to Terms"with the endless repetitions and meanderings of Schubert's Piano Sonata D 960 until he heard a rivetting Sviatoslav Richter's performance that put him into a Trance like State!Quite the same here!Performed Excellently by the superb Trio of Musicians -Stern,Istomin and Leonard Rose,The Trios leave a lasting impression. So overwhelming that I preferred not to switch on the Music Player in my car after listening to this recording at Home. The Melodies continued to ring in my memory, especially the Haunting Cello theme in the second movement of the E Flat Trio with a Funeral March like accompaniment on the Piano. In the whole of western Classical Music,no other theme reflects the poignance, the sense of utter Desolation and loneliness, yet the resigned good natured acceptance of the Yoke! The Human Soul accutely aware of its isolation from the Divine!

The B Flat Trio opens on an urgent and passionate note for the violin and cello passage with the Piano acrobatically ascending spirally in start stop charming fashion. The themes are repeated all the three by turns-Very arresting.Surely one of the great trios!

Leonard Rose,What a Cellist!Rostropovich or Yo Yo Ma may be exciting, but Rose is unmatched for his dignified elegance.I constantly catch myself exclaiming "Marvellous" listening to Rose Glorious cello playing.A Rose is a Rose is A Rose! With Passionate Stern and sensitive Istomin,Glorious Rose This is a once in a lifetime Buy.No need to Look Elsewhere.Ditto for their Beethoven,Brahms Trios!I now need to sample their Mendelssohn Trios too!"
