CD Reviews

SBB - great, "W filharmonii" - pitiable
Radoslaw Spiewak | Krakow, Poland | 11/07/2000
(1 out of 5 stars)

"It is painful to me as Polish patriot and SBB-fan to warn you, that this has been their worst production ever. They started in early 1970-ies with really cool progressive rock, later they developed into very inventive philharmonic jazz-rock. In the 1980-ies, SBB found a lot of applause not only in Poland, but also in Germany, Austria, and Scandinavia, and - believe me - there was a good reason for that. Just try to dig out in internet the CDs "Welcome", "Slovenian Girls", "Ze slowem biegne do ciebie" or "Memento z banalnym tryptykiem" - I guarantee you will find real pearls. And don't be affraid of Polish titles - SBB mostly PLAYS (and how!). Good taste of that you may find also in the "Follow my Dream" from the Amazon catalogue, but it should be only an aperitif for you. After the golden age has past, the musicians went apart and their recent attempt to revive the band, recorded on this "W filharmonii" CD is really pitiably. They killed their most wonderful compositions by making some jam-session warm-ups of them! E.g. "Singer" was originally a delicate and tasteful lullaby, and on this record they made a "beer bar blues" from it. But still: forget that they are now "living deads" or "playing zombies", remember that SBB was a diamond of European progressive jazz-rock in the seventies and eighties. One star only for their attemps."
