CD Reviews

A pleasant introduction to the peculiar man!
Stowaway | Australia | 05/16/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"
Satie was an anomaly in the world of classical music and remains one of the most fascinating and idiosyncratic composers in music history.

This compilation provides a pleasant introduction to his musical world. The orchestral tracks admittedly feel too lite and carry none of the complexity that Satie's compositions should.

However, Klara Kormendi performs the pieces beautifully, and her performances occupy the majority of the disc. Her sensitive interpretations reveal Satie's humour, eccentricity, and meloncholy in equal measure. She manages to reveal the many fascinating contradicitons in his compostions and plays with a genuinely emotive flair without ever drawing attention away from the pieces themselves.

This collection will almost surely result in your further investigation of Satie's work, and it could almost be a better bet to go straight into the deep end.

In any case, as a starting point, Klara Kormendi's performances serve as a fantastic way to hear Satie for the first time, whereas the orchestral arrangements provide a generally more hollow version (though occasionally quite pretty) of some of his most famous works.

A good start, but you'll most certainly want more."
The ultimate in classical easy listening!
Patrick W. Crabtree | Lucasville, OH USA | 01/31/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The only one who comes close to touching Erik Satie in classical easy listening pleasure is Frederick Delius -- but Satie is still "The King".

This CD is the perfect entrance to classical music listening -- anyone could enjoy this music. It's just great wallpaper for reading, dining, driving, or dishwashing.

What you'll hear is piano clarity and lots of intricately conceived scales. This is the sort of music which will transport you back to your youth, perhaps even to infancy.

Don't pass this one buy. This is a great CD."
