CD Reviews

At once rough and beautiful

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Sarah Fimm is a truly unemerged talent, and highly unappreciated artist. Most people liken her to Sarah McLachlan, which is really unfair to Fimm because, while their music is similar, their lyrical abilities are very differant. Fimm's songs ripple with the sexual tension 'Fumbling towards ecstacy' nearly attained, but succeeds where McLachlan failed by being more daring.Sarah Fimm is definitely daring with her music. She combines ethereal piano work with driving guitar riffs without comprimising either. This is sign of her magnificent skill. Other, inferior, artists attempt to blend the two into a unified sound. What comes out is too hard for pop lovers and too light for rockers. The way Fimm's songs transition from tear-jerker solo pianos to unforgiving rock (reminiscent of Kitty in some ways) is like she's sticking her tongue out at the music industry and saying 'Na-na na na-na'. Her seductive voice, coupled with her unapologetically sexual lyrics is another proof. Because her songs are sexy without being sleazy like a lot of other singers. Because her sexual lyrics, like her other lyrics, are so laden with truth and reality that they feel too personnal to feel like the soundtrack to 'Bikini Beach 6: Wet T-shirt winter'....My favorite song off of the album, 'Be like water', perfectly captures the frustration of a lot of modern Americans living in the shadow of political correctness and the pop-psychology that continually invades our lives. ...'Alien boys', 'Smoke', and 'Lioness' are more killer tracks that really touch on a very human and very honest level."
Sppoky and beautiful

"This is a beautiful CD. Sarah Fimm's piano playing is soothing and spooky at the same time. Her voice is lilting but strong, airy but gutsy. I don't really know whom to liken her to, perhaps a spookier Tori Amos...maybe a little Terami Hirsch and Portishead thrown in. Part "girl and piano" and one part techno. But really quite original. .
It's evident that Fimm is fond of the voice over as she uses this technique in several songs, all very effectively.
This CD covers a lot of styles very well. It's all atmospheric and ambient, but you'll find dabs of jazz, blues, rock, cabaret, and pop too.
If you like this kind of music you'll love this CD.
