Breathtakingly beautiful chamber singing
Theodore Shulman | NYC | 01/08/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I've been singing Renaissance music on and off since Jimmy Carter was President. If you like Renaissance sacred music, you need to hear this CD. Don't let the title fool you; these "songs" are mostly ensemble work and even the few solo songs are mostly exchanges with accompanying instruments.

You also need it if you're a Wunderlich fan. Fritz Wunderlich sings with a noticibly different style than he uses for Mozart or Schubert or Bach. You can still recognize his exquisite vowels and phrasing and his gallant presence but he sounds less like a miniature brass instrument and more like, well, a person, than usual.

Despite the presence of better-known composers like Heinrich Shutz, Telemann, and Buxtehude, the most staggeringly beautiful piece IMHO is track 6, the Graupner."
