CD Reviews

Fantastic! Rufus Rocks!
Alnisa Allgood | Madison, WI | 08/28/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a great album. I love discovering new music, and Wainwright's album is one of the many reasons why. Finding treasures like this just make me smile.Rufus has a a hint of Gershwin and Porter with their witty lyricism, and lush melodies. His keen "queer" sensibility impart both impassioned believer and harden cynic. With songs like "Foolish Love" and "In My Arms" invoking the both the joy and fear love, Wainwright hits his stride as a man swaggering with romance, bitterness, hope, and faith tied to his heart and offered to the world."I ain't a soft and sacchrine wannabe. Still I pray to God this song will end happily."We may not now where any love will take us, but Wainwright makes us acknowledge that even the jaded hope to get there."
The innovatie and original CD I've heard in ages!

"This CD must be of the most original CDs I've heard for a long time. I came across Rufus Wainwright's name via a friend who invited to dinner and played The McGarrigle Hour CD, and after listening to Rufus' performance of Goodnight Sweetheart, I knew I had to seek out a Rufus Wainwright label and that's how I came across this self titled CD. The best tracks have to be Barcelona followed by Danny Boy, Millbrook, Baby and Damned Ladies, although they're all very good. I can't describe each track on individual merit, but overall, the CD gives me feeling of incredible sensitivity together with innovative originality that evokes a profoundly deep level of emotion within me, particularly Barcelona and Millbrook. I have been an avid fan for many years of both his parents, Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III and although his voice sounds almost identical to his fathers, there is a smoother an softer touch to it. I also expected to hear parental influences on this CD, but I couldn't spot any. Rufus is a very strong, individual and sensitive character and I look forward to buying many more CDs of his like this one. Thank you, Rufus!"
Good, but Poses Better

"For a first major album this one is pretty good, but save your money buy the non-import... The "one" bonus track is not worth the extra $$ unless you're a major fan.

I like to have an album I can listen to over and over again. Buy Poses or Want One/Two."
