CD Reviews

Rossini as he was meant to be heard!
Nipperhorn | Apple Valley, MN United States | 03/27/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Carla Maria Giulini versions of Rossini's overtures have long been one of my all-time favorite classical recordings. I currently own both the old LP versions and the 1986 Angel CD. This new re-mastered version is an improvement over the 1986 issue for two reasons: The first is the sound quality. The sonics are greatly improved, with a punchier sound and much less tape hiss (although a tiny bit still sneaks through, one must remember that these are 1961 and 1965 analog recordings). The second is the inclusion of the "Tancredi" overture, which appeared on the original LP, but was inexplicably left off the 1986 digital version. As for the music, it is hard to say enough about it. It is nearly perfect in terms of orchestral balance and clarity. You can hear every subtle nuance of this delightful music, with Rossini's classic crescendo in full force! The instrumentalists are wonderful, the reeds in particular, giving tight, crisp performances that never sound stiff or rigid, but flow with the spirit that the composer no doubt intended. The music is wonderfully executed and captures the full Italian spirit and wit of Rossini beautifully! If you're looking for one CD of Rossini overtures with consistently vibrant performances from beginning to end, this is it. Viva Rossini! Viva Giulini!"
