CD Reviews

The old material is great, new material hit and miss
Todd Rosenstock | Newtown Square, PA USA | 10/15/1999
(3 out of 5 stars)

"While the old songs from Beck Group and Faces are killer as always, the new Nile Rogers-produced stuff is problematic. This is a shame considering the covers had so much potential. Stevie Nicks's Stand Back has stale instrumentation and Ruby Tuesday is unlistenable. First I look at the Purse is done as a low-key finger-snapper and it works really well--he has to sing and can't hide behind mannerisms. Shotgun Wedding is the rocker, not his best, but not his worst. Waits' Tom Traubert's Blues is the highlight--better than Unplugged--great strings and he drags every ounce of passion out of the song. For collector's only."

"Lead Vocalist included five new tracks that were recorded for an aborted album called "Once in a Blue Moon." Fortunately, Rhino is restoring this first great Rod Stewart covers album and releasing it in its entirety on their website with bonus tracks on Jan. 11, 2010. This will be a five-star, must-have for any Rod Stewart fan."
