CD Reviews

It's "Robyn Is Here" Without 3 Songs

"If you're not a Robyn fan this CD is a shorter version of "Robyn Is Here" at a slightly smaller price.

[This version does not have the title cut, "Just Another Girlfriend, nor "I Wish (A Capella)."] You're better off just buying the "Robyn Is Here" CD at a record store, when it's about a dollar or two more at most.

If you are a Robyn fan this release is definitely a major disappointment. That's because Robyn has cut 2 more CDs since "Robyn Is Here" went platinum in the US in 1998. Neither was released in the US, and you might indeed think Zomba/Jive Records and BMG would have put SOMETHING from her last 2 CDs on this release, just to save face. Having an artist with just one CD out there but one "greatest hits" CD is definitely the record industry's version of "damning someone with faint praise."

Many folks think "My Truth" is her best work and "Don't Stop The Music" is at least on a par with her first effort. And if you haven't heard "Underneath The Heart," "88 Days," "Long Gone," or "Moonlight" you really haven't heard Robyn at her best.

So much of Robyn's work has become not just about the search for love but the quest for a real soulmate -- that's what makes her later CDs so intimate and articulate. And, as in "Don't Stop The Music" and "Keep This Fire Burning" she still finds plenty of reason to dance. BMG and its record labels really miss the boat here by not making "Robyn's Best" truly Robyn's best. Maybe with a little luck, her next "greatest hits" CD will be on another label."

"This album is pretty pointless. It just picks 10 songs from her first album "Robyn Is Here". When you could easily buy "Robyn Is Here" which includes these 10 songs and 3 others. To sum up the songs on this CD the first 3, which are "Do You Know (What It Takes)", "Do You Really Want Me" and "Show Me Love" are the only actual hits on the album, which is usually why someone creates a Best Of CD. To top it all off the album includes the song "Here We Go" which is foul and grotesque in all its glory. The songs "In My Heart", "Don't Want You Back" and "Bumpy Ride" are good songs and are definitely worth the listen. But the song "Just Another Girlfriend" should have been included instead of "Here We Go". Also the song "You've Got That Something", which was a huge hit in Sweden is definitely appropriate on the album, for it is catchy and good like the first 3 songs. Then there is "The Last Time" which is a medium song, but over all in the 10 best songs of Robyn. Last but not least "How" is a extremely strong song, and very excellent. Over all the album is pointless when you could just buy "Robyn Is Here" and get the 3 tracks not on this album. Here is what I think the album should be if there has to be 10 of her best: (In order)

1. Do You Really Want Me (Show Respect)

2. Show Me Love

3. Do You Know (What It Takes)

4. How

5. In My Heart

6. You've Got That Something

7. I Don't Want You Back

8. Just Another Girlfriend

9. Bumpy Ride

10. The Last Time

So skip the album and buy "Robyn Is Here""
